Firmware update i8910xxig2. Fix 720p audio to AAC

New Official update to fix 720p audio codec to AAC

New Official update to fix 720p audio codec to AAC.

Samsung will soon have a major official firmware update available for Samsung i8910 Omnia HD users, this update will bring us a much needed general update. Which will focus on improved battery life, general speed improvements, new widgets and new games and applications. But biggest fix of all for most users is Samsung will replace the AMR audio codec (which plagued the 720p audio) with a much better AAC audio codec.

As you can see from the media info screenshot above, taken by a German tester of the new firmware. The 720p video is at 24fps, while audio is now a AAC codec, 32000 Hz 16000 Hz, mono @ 512kbs 256kbs (bitrate). Which isn’t too bad. This should give us good audio quality.

Edit: We have since seen a video recorded on the new firmware. And the properties state:

Video: MPEG4 Video 1280×720 [Video]
Audio: AAC 16000Hz mono 256Kbps [Audio]

Download the sample to see for yourself:

http://rapidshare.com/files/251897008/Video009.mp4 or
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QWVB665O

Interesting to note that its 2 channel, does this mean Samsung are not only using the Mic just above the camera lens (That’s the dedicated video mic). but also the microphone for voice calls too? To record stereo?

Samsung Omnia HD The development of new software version is complete. The quality checks, which are always performed for each new version, have been launched and will end within a week. Soon after, you can upgrade the terminal through PC Studio 7. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience. We are confident however that the result will live up to expectations.

We think the update will be either i8910xxig2 or i8910xeig2

Thanks to cinek from our forums for the info.

We will post asap when we either have the update or the official update is live over the Samsung phone updater.

Digg!

any idae if it will re-enable the FM Transmitter? or did they remove the hardware too (and not only the software)?

The FM transmitter was removed from the hardware specs. in the end, so no software will enable that function, sadly.

Well I don’t really care about other functions as FM Transmitter as long as camera will record in this type of AAC. The java heap memory issue is quite overwhelming but I am sure they will fix it in next firmwares. All in all with these updates this is becoming by far the best mobile device on our planet. Thanks Samsung!

Unfortunately, VLC read the data wrong, the audio hasn’t got a sampling rate of 32kHz, instead it has just 16kHz.

OOh and btw. the Audio Bitrate is just 98kbit/s not 512kbit/s!

for example, the Nokia 5800 XM has 48Khz Audio with a Bitrate of 768Kbps

Mr. Briggs, I’ve been a Nokia fanboy for a couple of years now… but now I plan to buy the Omnia HD(once it becomes available here in Dubai UAE)because the N97 doesn’t cut it! My question is about FIRMWARE UPDATES. Is updating the FW of a Samsung unit(in this case the i8910 Omnia HD) as easy as updating a Nokia(Nokia Software updater)? I also read in some forums that Samsung has these drawbacks regarding after-sales service, specifically firmware updates?

Yes it will be the same, that is once Samsung release the offical firmware update. Which is soon, you just need to run the software update once its live. Much like Nokias updater. It looks the same.

I need to see a test on D1 resolution, or VGA. I just hope they make it 44Khz in these resolutions, because 16Khz isn’t that good. And we can’t judge anything just by that video, it’s almost silent.

The good part is that Samsung do try to fix it, what is awesome. The bad part is that a good intention isn’t enough here.

But briggs….every time i try the samsung updater, it will not get past step one. When i press start it just scans my phone for the firmware i currently have but just scans and scans. It never gets past step 1 as i say….so must be a bad piece of software cos i know other people have this problem too. The previous version of samsung pc studio wouldn’t even load up the updater, but the latest version loads up but as i said, wont get past step 1. So god knows how i’m gonna be able to get the firmware update, if it ever does come out!

I have the same problem. I have unbranded i8910 and PC Suite Software Updater says that this phone is not supported. I hope this service for i8910 is just turned off on Samsung servers for there have been no official firmware updates so far. When this update is ready I think Samsung will add support for i8910 on it’s servers and we’ll be able to update our devices.

We need another sample one with a person moving and talking in frame on a busy street to be able to see if the extra visual data effects frame rate, how background noise is handled and wether the camera can keep lipsync. Also I know this may sound strange, but I used to do this with my original XDA, if the headphones are plugged in, the recorded audio should switch to the mic on the headphone line so it can be used as an emergency lapel mic in the field. This also allows for third party mics to be adapted for use.

Well, the general opinion is that one should use windows xp for debranding and that pc studio may not be so compatible with windows vista. However,as i already posted, i have disabled Mcafee virus scanner/suite and pc studio 7 worked fine, even though there are no upgrades yet. PC studio 7 never worked and hanged on the magnifying glass step 1/4 before when i didnt disable the virus scanner. Who knows , maybe this was the problem everybody talked about, regarding pc studio 7 and windows vista. I hope this helps others!!!

    Hi -

I called support here in Denmark, and they told me that i had to go to Telecare (Danish mobile rapair center) to get it updated. PC studio don’t have the function to update the phone as Nokia at the moment. Strange – because PC studio now checks for updates and says i have the latest software. Still, it’s a good sign that PC studio now works.

The promblems i have is: Very poor battery time, will only last for 8 hours. Geotagging is not working, and Road sync dosen’t sync my contact pictures from Outlook.

Samsung here in Denmark dosen’t now anything ! Poor support for such a great phone. Samsung need’s to come with some updates, if they want succes.
