i8910 Omnia HD Car Phone Holder user review

i8910 Car holder for GPS

Today I received my i8910 Omnia HD car holder. This is a car holder I brought from ebay, hearing only positive reviews from our i8910 HD User forum I decided get this car holder Vs the (expensive) Brodit holder.

The car holder come from Hong Kong and took over a week to arrive. I’m really surprised by this as the plastic is quite strong, its stable and the suction cup connection to the windscreen doesn’t move about at all. Very tight! The best thing is it holds the phone very well and there is no movement at all. You have access to all the phones button and even the camera is free to record your trip. As well as the 3.5mm phone jack if you can stereo has a 3.5mm stereo input.

I took this out for a spin on a quick 25 minute trip out near the airport. It worked flawlessly and as I said I’m very impressed with it. It can be used both vertical and horizontally. I prefer having it horizontal and it even makes the phone look more like a dedicated GPS unit rather than a mobile phone.

My i8910 looks more like a dedicated Garmin GPS unit here :)

The holder hold the phone from the clips and the top and bottom, plus two lips on the side. The left and right loudspeakers and both free and not covered. The design of this is great, the only issue I have is that it might scratch the phone when placed in the holder and when removed. To fix this I decided to do a quick mod of the holder. Using some soft black insulation tape on the places where the phone is in contact with the car holder this removes any risk of scartching the phone. See my photo of this below. Its not as pretty but it works and least its black insulation tape. Not white!

Quick mod: Black insulation tape to advoid any phone scratches.

Conclusion:

Design: 9/10 – It has been designed well.

Construction: 8/10 – Made of solid plastic and holds the phone well. Very strong glass suction cup! However lacks some soft foam or rubber on the clips to help stop scratches.

Price: 10/10 – about 8 pounds delivery its a bargain!

Usability: 10/10 – Its small. Can be used both horizontally and vertically. All buttons are free an usable. Even the camera is free, an added bonus!

Overall: 9/10 – If it had some foam or rubber feat on the clips it would be 10/10.

FYI: The Ebay auction I brought this from is here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130317651419&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Others aren’t made for the i8910 and are just generic phone holders that are very poor as they block the usb/ port and buttons.

At first I saw it great. The problem is, that it is so hard to get phone in and specialy out from it. The two side locks are very badly done (hard and fragile) and the plastic is bad quality. The side holder broke when I wanted to take the phone out of the holder and I pressed on it. So, I do not have it any more. Bad luck someone would say. I say, bad product.

Did you end up buying this holder? If you did, did it still fit with the rubber case?

Get an Official Samsung i8510 car charger. Its the same one for the i8910. I brought a i8910 cheap charger off ebay and it melted :( Stay away from non official charges.

Sorry to repeat the same question from other readers for the third time but,

“DOES THE PHONE STILL FIT WITH ONE OF THE HARD PROTECTION CASES ON IT?”

These hard rubber cases are great but almost impossible to take off without breaking the clips.

No, the phone won’t fit with any kind of case on it – it’s molded to fit perfectly without a case.

Received mine also this morning, £7.04 delivered from the same seller – excellent holder!

The phone will not fit into this holder with any sort of case on it, as it’s a really snug fit – Which is great IMO, a screen protector is about all you’ll get away with.

Indeed, the only cradle Samsung themselves sell for the i8910 is a universal (read useless) one!

    Hi all,

I would clearly recommend the following car holder for i8910: Ebay Item number: 150373902606.

The quality and functionality levels are very high and the price is reasonable.

Would this car mount work with an Invisible Shield applied to the phone?

As well, which would you guys recommend: the car mount on this review, or the one posted by ‘Thais’ (post #19)?

Mine broke in two. Considering the place of fracture, I would say the reason is poor quality ( http://www.shrani.si/f/D/pi/4QdUSmby/photo010.jpg ). Otherwise I found it great – it’s small, I found it very easy to put the phone in and out (just turn it around a little and it jumps right out) and it held the phone well untill it broke. The only thing it made me wonder were the vibrations it put to the phone, because it doesn’t damp it one bit, so when I was driving on the highway, the vibrations were quite “heavy”.

Another member bought the one in the post #19 and he is very satisfied. But it’s expensive and you can’t take photos while it’s in. He bought it from a store for 20+€ (only the holder), which I find too expensive. 20€ for the holder and the charger is good price, but I already have the charger, so I’m staying with the generic holder for now. Or maybe I will glue this one.

The design of this is great, the only issue I have is that it might scratch the phone when placed in the holder and when removed. To fix this I decided to do a quick mod of the holder.
