Official Samsung i8910 Omnia HD update on the way

Not sure if this is a direct result of the Samsung i8910 HD Petition that was started, however its something to be thankful for. Samsung have finally announced that they will be releasing a new official firmware come January 2010. First up we will have kentic scrolling over the whole phone’s OS, not just the browser as in the current firmware. Also were going to see a new Media Graphics Engine, this will improve the whole media playback speed and I assume this means a faster gallery and photo browser?

No mention of the 720p video now being a flat 24fps, which leads me to beleive that maybe its a hardware limitation. Which is why Samsung cannot give us a flat 24fps on our 720p video recordings. Instead 22 aprox fps will be our maxing frames per second.

Here’s the official list of changes:

-Webkit update: A faster user-interface when online, for swift navigation of your favourite websites
-Graphic engine: An improved graphic engine, increasing the speed to access the multimedia content
-Kinetic scrolling: The addition of a kinetic scrolling system provides a superior full-touch experience

Lets hope there are also some behind the scene fixes as well.

It is about time. I have many problems that I hope they have fixed without announcing. such as during a call if I try to enable loud speaker or open the dialler, the screen continually goes black, and I have to be as quick as I can to do what I need to do (which can be annoying when your calling customer services and continually get asked to press 1 for this, press 2 for that, ect ect.). anyway lets hope this firmware is gonna make using the mobile a little more of a smooth process.

Mmm… I’m not so entusiast of this update… I mean, yeah… Kinetic scrolling is beautiful and somehow useful, but I don’t think it is our priority.
I still hope in some improvment of video or at least audio recording. It’s a shame that such multimedia phone has such limitations, expecially after the words samsung used to promote it.
I’m sad to read that fm transmitter is not present… It would have been a great piece of news!
Nevertheless, I hope they have corrected all the bugs had the last update (I have official latest italian firmware version).
And I hope in a better samsung apps service (with the last update my apps software chrashed… but it wouldn’t be of any use anyway, there are no applications… -_-’)

Sorry Guys it seems Samsung can’t do anything about the video 720p at @ 24fps may be because of wrong choice of OS (Symbian not efficient on processor use) and not enough processor speed, must be 1Ghz at least. Regarding the audio they should fix that one together with kinetic scrolling because Symbian S60 5th edition is capable now of kinetic scrolling. In fairness to Samsung, I think they’re competitive with this type of smartphone only that they should upgrade to at least 1Ghz processor, still 720p, AMOLED Screen with higher res., 16M Colors, Android 2.1 OS, at least 32GB internal mass memory. By the way, I’m using 720 x 480 instead of 1280 x 720 and video looks fine @ 30fps and 7.5MBps video bit rate and audio is also better. I know it’s not 720p but at least decent video quality and at least better than iphone 3GS . I wonder if Apple will upgrade hardware specs like Samsung does with i8910 because Apple always want to maximize it’s profit, LOL. It’s a shame that iphone 3GS doesn’t even have an AMOLED screen.

“The firmware update will be available from January 2010 in the UK and gradually rolled out to other European markets, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, Africa and rest of the world. ”

This is interesting… as the i8910 as far as I know is exclusive to orange in the UK, this means you won’t have to void your warrenty to get this. Hopefully it’ll unlock the phone too.

Hi Guys, I hops as well as some of you others guys that Samsung REALY does something about he camera, I bougt the phone because it was the best CAMERA MOBILE 2009!!! I don’t know what firmware or hardware Samsung presented to the board that gave Omnia HD the reward of the best camera phone 2009….. but I know it was not what I have in my hand, because it’s absolut SHIT! I retired my old Nokia 6220 Clasic with 5MP Carl zeiss becase Omnia HD was better then Nokia N97 with the same camera as 6220, but so far I haven’t yet manage to take a diesent picture with the Omnia, the pictures comes out blury, noicy, crappy colors I cant underline enough how shity the camera is!!!! and realy what the hell is it that you can’t have antishake and flash at the same time???!!! what moron made that decision? If I were to travel around withe a tripod to mount my camera on every time I would like to take a picure I would probably not chose to take pictures witha a PHONE!!! I can say as for me, if this update dosent fix this issue I’m gonna clame back my money because this is the pice of shit camera phone for 2009.

High Definition video recording, for the first time on a mobile phone. Omnia HD records video in the HD 720p (i.e. so-called “HD ready”) resolution consisting of 1280×720 pixels. And yes, it’s really THAT resolution, and not any kind of interpolation or other digital software processing. This results in videos being EXTREMELY detailed, something not seen ever before on a mobile phone. Videos are clear, properly focused and sharp. And that’s the good news. Unfortunately, there are some bad (well, not really bad, just worse) news, too. The first one is that HD videos don’t fully match the HD standard because of their frame rate, which is between 20-21 frames per second instead of the advertised 24 fps. It is sufficient in most cases not to affect video quality but in some circumstances (like e.g. dim lighting and fast move) it sometimes results in fast motion being blurred, semi-transparent or unsmooth. This reduced frame rate probably results from hardware limitations. OMAP3430 specifications mention that the IVA 2+ (Image Video Audio) accelerator inside the processor enables multi-standard (MPEG4, WMV9, RealVideo, H263, H264) encode/decode at D1 (720×480 pixels) 30 fps, so going HD 720p most probably required cutting down the frame rate to keep the total bandwidth (of about 7.5 Mbit/s) within the supported range. The question is if we should complain about it while no other mobile phone comes even close, not to mention offering anything better than that….?

The following two sample video recordings (HD 720p) show quality in good lighting conditions. The second part of the review will contain some samples taken in dim light and with some fast motion. Click the thumbnails to download the videos (in MP4 format).

Mercado, Come on. How can you sell such an expensive product and not update it when obvious flaws rear their ugly heads? Had this been apple the updates would have been almost immediately and Apple is a new comer.
I am not an Apple fan for the way they keep you tied to them even after buying their over priced products but they stick with their costumers.

Come on man. The Omia HD is not cheap in price nor functions therefore the costumer service should not be cheap either.

    Mr. Mercado.
Whether or not other phones come close is irrelevant. Samsung have advertised this product as being HD and have priced it accordingly. If you bought a brand new car would you expect it to have only 3 wheels?
I am and have been a big Samsung fan for a long time now but I have to agree with a lot of people out there in that the failings of the i8910, (and the very limited support that Samsung provide) are making me re-think about what’s more important. Having what should be the best camera phone on the market but doesn’t seem to be, or having a fairly decent product that works as it should with the support behind it that if somthing DOES go wrong, the manufacturer will fix the problem straight away.
7 months is far too long to wait for an official firmware update, and from what I have read it will only fix a small percentage of the issues.
C’mon Samsung, get your act together!

I’ve never used the PC Suite updater as it’s useless. The Smbian flash tool (v1.5) works a charm and I’ve tried about every official firmware going. I’m now on custom firmware.

Finally, I moved from Nokia after many loyal years, as they did not respond to what customers wanted – So, I jump ship to Samsung, and while the phone is really good – the support and software let it down.

This could’ve been a benchmark phone for Samsung (N95 style), setting the bar and gaining many a customer – instead those that bought, have been disappointed that the potential for the phone has not been realised, and they will likely leave…………..and never return.

I’ll try the new firmware, when it is available (which will not be Jan, it’ll be Feb at the earliest – probably March!!!!!!!!) – shame really!!!!

    Are you using windows 7?

If so you need to manually install drivers for your phone. Go into computer management right click on the device (it will show as unknown device) and click to install driver. Then direct the install to the root pc studio 7 folder in program files (x86) and this will then resolve the issue.

Guys, I was so happy just before going for Samsung HD. I used it just for 2 weeks. Then a problem related to software occured! Now my lovely phone is in the customer service in order to be repaired or updated or whatever!! So you see, everybody is complaining. And this is not happening to only HD! Two friends of mine who own Omnia2 had the same software problems! Are there no good phones anymore? Every single phone I had felt like an upgrade, until I purchased a N95, this was worse than the Sony I had previously used…I then changed to a Pixon, but quitely returned it because it was rubbish…I got an i8910HD instead.

For some reason Orange completely broke the phone, so the first major improvement was switching to the Italian firmware. Then the next major improvement was to tun off the Samsung designed interface and use the default Symbian interface. Then further improvement was made by turning off all the motion sensors! After turning off the motion sensors the phone is finally better than my previous N95.

I wondered so many times why I frequently never heard calls…well apparently the motion sensor assumes that walking is the appropriate motion to turn off the sound…HOW DID THAT MAKE IT THROUGH TESTING? Then there is the tilt gallery, COMPLETELY USELESS! Only occasionally would I appreciate the rotate to switch the aspect of the photo, but without it is significantly easier to show people your photos with out them taking the phone from you only for the image to disappear and rotate then then they turn it to see the photo properly and cause the rotation to kick in again…much better just turned off!

I hope my next phone is an instant improvement…wonder what it will be.

I spoke to Samsung the other day and the said the firmware was out bet that they had to update the drivers on studio before you could download it, good planning eh. Also Orange told me that because they put a lot of software on the phone themselves, they had to check the new firmware for conflicts before it can go on to Orange phones. This all just gets better and better

I don’t think they will release an update very soon, perhaps in march somewhere?

The italians should have the new firmware already according to the Samsung website, but no sign of any update anywhere…

This Samsung phone has been both very expensive and hell to use for me. Samsung promises alot, but never delivers. When the new iPhone is out in stores June 2010, I’ll buy that sweet machine, at least Apple keeps it’s promises, very fast phone with regular updates and a huge app-store and its cheaper than the i8910 16GB which i bought almost 6 months ago :( .

So I will make it my personal goal in life never to buy any Samsung products ever again, unless some nuclear fallout in the rest of the world forces me to buy it because its the only brand left in the world. After I try to build it myself ofcourse xD.

I’m terribly sorry for you all, just buy a new phone or get a custom cooked rom or hope some geek will port Android to this phone (drool)…

Well I’ve just ran an update using the PC Studio software with my phone that had the last Italian firmware and now has the latest Italian firmware I8910XXII2. What’s the difference..? Nothing, no kinetic scrolling as seen in the Youtube videos etc just exactly the same as before. Now i have a boring task of reinstalling and reconfiguring all the software and info i took of before the installation. My advice don’t waste your time! Unless there is a code that switches on/off the kinetic scrolling we don’t know about, keep the firmware you currently have until they sort this firmware update malarkey out.

As powerful as this phones’ potential is, Samsung has done it no favours with the software of the interface. Multi-touch and the Kinetic scrolling issue are just a few of the things this phone should have had since day one. The music and video player are poor with few options considering what could be done. Simple things to make the aesthetics appealing like decent sized album art when tracks are playing, video size to fit screen options for either vertical or horizontal. Thumbnail refresh rate is a joke for images, and why does the gallery show picture files from outside the actual picture folder? It constantly displays elements form installed widgets or applications if they contain any form of Jpg or Bmp’s files. The only thing I want to see in the gallery are the photos taken with the camera and the pictures I’ve transferred over to the image folder, not the contents of other installation folders! And the instant messaging could look so much better, contact picture, speech-bubbles, rolling conversation displays like an Instant Messenger.

These simple things are what smart-phones today are expected to do standing on their heads! Samsung need to scrap the multi tasking on the i8910, totally revise how the system manages its memory and resources for each application and maybe hire a decent graphic designer and a few cool programmers with some vision. The phone should have been swimming in applications by now from third-party developers instead of dodgy port-over versions from the iphone! This phone is great, but it’s sorely under-utilized because of the potential not being realized!

Yeah I realized, but there’s all these third party developed firmware with Kinetic scrolling all parading over youtube etc and that’s my point. If they can do it for the handset then how’s it taken lord knows how many updates for Samsung to make a legitimate attempt?

If Samsung want to address the shortcomings of the i8910 interface then they need to listen to their customers even more purposeful than they have before. Granted they’ve at least done so and delivered constant updates in the past which is more than some manufacturers would have done. But there shouldn’t be a need for so many updates that still miss the mark, just list all the failings of the software, address them and then release one updated firmware to please your customers and make future releases attractive to other potential buyers and third party developers.

You know the one thing all my previous phones had and this one lacks which still bothers me? An constant alert/reminder for text msg and voicemail that haven’t been opened. How simple is that to program?

I don’t know what is Samsung up to,they just selling their products for mere profits and no public satisfaction where as apple is working very hard on their devices .
I was disappointed to see that Samsung has not yet released any application or game which can use the full power of omnia hd(i.e graphics ,processor) whereas Apple is constantly flooding the market with such applications for their OS.
Samsung, you just make mobiles with so much potential, but seriously just potential nothing else!
So much high quality hardware of omnia hd is of no use!!!!!(no 3d high graphics games,no video editing software,no multitouch input etc.)
Samsung has lost respect in my eyes and this is and will be the last mobile that I purchased from Samsung.
Almost all of the people who bought Omnia HD surely had a choice of Apple Iphone3GS but due to the expected performance, features and support from HD they choose Samsung.
But Samsung lost in all these three aspects.
I don’t know when Samsung will start listening to us!!
This mobile is capable of ruling over all phones in the market today but is being suppressed by the poor s60v5 OS.
Samsung should try putting some other OS which could use omnia hd’s full ability,
Future of s60v5 isn’t looking good!!

Just correct me if I am wrong in something.

Whats the point in quoting RAM and Megapixels and the such when their phones are just clearly better!

The i8910 pictures are good, but my girlfriend bought a small camera the other day and since then I no longer use the camera. The video was always dissapointing because of the sound. The apps – what apps?!! And the music player was better on my old N95.

Now my girlfriend takes her camera everywhere, i’ll be looking to get an iPhone or maybe a blackberry. It really is such a shame.

The upside is i essentially got it for free due to the whole orange contract cock up thing!!

hi all. i was wondering that why are we complaining so much about the phone, why did some one buy omnia hd, the answer is straight, because of the following reasons, 1 hd recording ( not full hd but no phone till date has it) 2. gps navigation which is free of cost which iphone 3gs doesnt have. 3. the biggest amole screen ever when we bought it.(now i dont know if some phone has or not, but the screen resolution is very bright compare to my 2nd gen ipod which screen is as it of iphone. 4. third pary crack softwares games and many more. just wait for the best to come when samsung reales the firmware is their is so otherwise i am happy with my phone because i use it as a camcorder and dedicated gps unit for my car and i am quite happy with it and just waiting for the 32 gb mmc to upgrade the memory to 16+8 to 16+32 =a woping 48 gb which no phone till date has, enjoy what u have

This phone has great possibilities but the software they’ve installed for it is mediocre at best. All the complaining in the world isn’t going to make Samsung do the decent thing and completely revise a new GUI for it. I suspect we’ll be presented with more firmware updates in the future as we have been in the past but nothing that will give the phone the much needed make-over it so desperately requires.

When my contract expires, i’ll be looking into the new HTC HD2 or the Google Nexus One and maybe even the Microsoft Zune HD phone if it does materialise. Samsung will have to perform a miracle to keep me holding onto this mobile a minute after the contract is over!

What can you expect from a phone that comes with a PC software CD so that, when trying to update the phone using this program, it says that it can’t recognize the phone model??? It seems like a bad joke, just incredible.

Another cause why I regret to have bought this phone is that I don’t see the point of being able to record video in High Definition, where there’s no human way to play this video in a HD TV. Why do you need 720p, for a few inches mobile screen?

No accesories, no HDMI cable, no updates… I bougth this phone here in Barcelona for 649€ … OUCH!!!!

No more Samsung at all. For me this brand is dead… Next time, I’ll buy an Iphone or whichever phone that I know people is happy with. If you have to do experiments, better to do them in the kitchen. :-)

Listen people I have an idea,as I have seen in the forums and elsewhere in the internet there are many people who are expert in this field of firmware ,software, hardware etc..
So why don’t someone gather them all and try to boot some other OS in this phone like android!
and to keep them motivated each one of us can donate some amount of money to them like 2 or 3 dollars(Nothing as compared to 800 dollars spent on mobile lol!!) .
    OR
We could eat the head of Samsung by emailing them by going to your own country specific website and clicking Contact Us at the bottom of the page and clicking on email and sending them(just keep flooding them with millions of emails)
with all complains about less games,no multi-touch, etc etc … including all your personal problems..
    and wait what happens..

    OR
just sit at home and relax and think that what fking mobile I have bought and wasted my money on,and then wait to buy some other mobile(obviously not from Samsung) which may keep up to your needs.

About this “flashing mobile with cooked ROM” subject that I’ve read about in nearly ALL of the forums related with i8910, certainly it’s a temptress option, given the lack of official alternatives provided by Samsung. BUT, I don’t want to lose warranty! I bought i8910 one month ago… what if it has some hardware failure that hasn’t showed up yet, but maybe it does in one, seven or twelve months? Electronic devices can have a factory error and you don’t notice until the day when it crashes. What if I flash the mobile and, say, one morning in one month from now I found the mobile is off and it won’t start? It’s a shame that Samsung enforces their clients to lose their warranties due to the absolutely astonishing and embarrasing lack of support.

I’ve flashed this device with the GTI8910XXIL5 UK firmware that’s currently being debated if it’s the final version or a Beta. Well if it’s the final version then its full of bugs, the scroll bar in the media browser does its own thing, the kinetic scrolling is very choppy and slow, Pictures that were taken at 8mp are corrupted when viewed using the ‘Gallery Browser’ and the ‘Mediabrowser’ has lost the ability to rotate using the accelerator. Let’s hope a week from now the official release has fixed all these otherwise there’s gonna be a lot of p’d off customers out there! If you have the Italian current firmware as I did before changing, KEEP IT, its much better than this!

Samsung Omnia HD is my all-in-one device, smartphone, digi cam, camcorder, music player everything. I tried really hard to research for the apps i need and I got all for free. No goofy $4.99 or $9.99 whatever just like in apple apps store. For example, I just downloaded ferrari gt evolution (very cool HD Game) & Microsoft Mobile Office with editing, all for free, go figure.

Until now, no other smartphone can match Omnia HD package deal. In fact, if you buy it just now, you can avail discounted price up to 20% from original price almost a year ago, so even more value to your money. Hardware specs, 720p recording, 8mp cam, AMOLED screen, OMAP 3430 processor, much better GPS receiver, fm recording not just receiving, HSDPA 7.2MBps / HSUPA 5.76MBps not just 2MBps, very efficient music player & video player, symbian advantages like USB 2.0 file transfer full speed and you can even use phone modem to laptop via bluetooth and Omnia HD is easy to hack no need for technician unlike iphone.

Lastly, but of course all of us need firmware updates, perhaps Samsung still working on it. I know Samsung can do it. They have resources they can even make 3D TVs and other stuff that American Companies can’t.

Isa Saro I respect your opinion, but you can get all that similar features with any other s60v5 mobile phone(Leaving aside the incomplete 22-23fps Hd recording) ,
    but wait a second-
ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz, and PowerVR SGX graphics all that is similar to new Iphone3GS
but the speed accordingly(in kinetic scrolling etc.) is even not comparable to ipod touch 1st generation….
    but why?
How was Apple able make it up with the 1st generation ipod touch(even with slow processor and graphics) and even when it was released it already had kinetic scrolling!!!!!! why? did they have more brains?
And the answer is NO! the problem is that Samsung does not put much effort to it in terms of appearance(of OS),performance and public interest.
Apple just have their ears open for public.
As you mentioned that Samsung has the capacity to invent new things, I also agree with the fact that the quality of the hardware is very good(and it’s great) as compared to other mobiles but is the hardware just for decoration,
The astonishing fact is that Apple is so much into its products it recently released Grand Theft Auto(full 3d)
    for Iphone and Ipod touch.
And my dear you should never expect GTA(in full 3d) in s60v5.
I have only one major complain with Samsung —why s60v5????????(It’s a good Os but not for Omnia HD)
It doesn’t even holds multitouch (but the hardware supports it) and the price of Omnia Hd is comparable to Apple Iphone3GS so it doesn’t mean that Samsung is trying to give less for less!!!!
So Samsung I am not saying that everything and anything(all the hard work) that you did for Omnia HD had gone into the dustbin,I am just saying that a little more effort in the right direction could do miracles!!
Samsung is building up a new Os named “bada”(which I think would be quite promising)and if they somehow implement this in Omnia Hd as soon as possible it would be great!!!!!!!!

With all the problems I have with this phone, I’d still not swap it for an iPhone in a million years. The iPhone is nice but it has worse shortcomings! You can’t blue tooth any other media device except headphones and other iPhones, why? Because the beast that is APPLE-corp doesn’t like you playing with the other kids, just keep it in the family and you won’t catch nasty germs from the other children! The iPhone has a joke for a camera, it’s 3.2mp and after 3 generations still doesn’t have a FLASH!!! Unless the sun is out, you can’t take a picture! The iPhone’s video is basic as hell, it has nice editing software for it but the video is basic VGA resolution. It won’t play any videos without being transcoded into a format that is approved by apple i.e their own! The screen on the apple is fragile as hell, everyone I know with one has broken their screen! And the device is far too iTunes reliant for my lifestyle. Literally when you buy into the Apple product you buy into their lifestyle and their rules or they lock you out and your phone becomes a brick! I prefer to be able to download whatever I like in whatever format I choose and play it without worrying about breaking corporate laws, rules and regulations that keeps them rich and us mere suckers. I don’t care about throwing money after thousands of applications that i don’t need to use, i just want a phone that is free to work with the rest of the worlds devices and not be part of some corporate rule club with its own laws of how I should cultivate my lifestyle make them rich and interact only within their techno cult. The damn phone doesn’t even have any expansion for memory cards becasue that would be spending money outside of the corporate club! Apple marketing and the way they’ve managed to sell this expensive cult-like lifestyle to people is like something out of Invasion of the Body Snatchers! Samsungs i8910 HD may have its problems, but it allows me to keep my individuality and independence, iphone users simply have to feed apple for everything or have no service be it videos, apps, equipment and insanely costly repair after service!

Nicely Said Ceejay. Must admit i agree with a lot of what you say, just wish samsung would treat us with a little more consideration. Noticed that they put out a new Studio version for the Omnia II yesterday. really starting to think that they are just stringing i8910 owners along. I think iys a nice phone but i think they made a mistake in their choice of OS. Dont know a lot about these things, but it would be great if they could somehow come up with a way to change the OS to Android or Windows. Like is say, dont know if its possible but it would help a lot and make the phone more marketable.

well I had an upgrade last week and i,m ashamed to say i upgraded to a iphone 3gs,I still really like my hd and hope the new update will sort it once and for all and put it back on the throne at the top of the heap. The hd has massive potential but yes samsung do seem to have treated it as a poor relation and not the flagship it deserves to be,the 3 gs is a cool phone and with over 100,00 apps! has enough to keep most people happy. The video is however a joke when compared to the hd as is the camera and quite a few other things,I can,t see samsung being able (or bothered) to compete with the apps side of thingsbut as I said I,m hoping they do enough for me to be able to put my 3gs on ebay as an unwanted upgrade once the update is released.
COME ON SAMSUNG SORT IT OUT THE POTENTIAL IS HUGE !!!!!

Oh yeah… I agree with all these ideas about not being band-dependant, which is what Apple makes you. I think technology should open doors, not close them. And I don’t like the purchases where you are commiting yourself to purchase forever and ever products from the same company (is for this same reason that I’m reluctant to buy a Nespresso machine :-) ). As some of you say, you’re not buying an IPhone… you’re buying the whole pack of Apple-lifestyle, and that sucks because you’re not given alternative choices..

That said, IPhone owners do at least have a tested, good-looking, easy-to-use interface. Thay also have access to a lot of apps, widgets, games, etc… and there’s constant development work for Iphone software.
As I said before, I don’t like this idea of “becoming part of Apple’s world”… I want my OWN world and choose what I want from each provider.. but is this the alternative? A phone that has NO SUPPORT, plagued with bugs, no applications, no widgets (the More Widgets latest widget is from more taht a month ago!!!!!), and that costs a LOT of money just for having a great hardware which is, merely, of no use at all.

For not wanting to become a silly-Apple-dependant customer, we become a silly-begging-and-crying-for-support-from-Samsung. I’d rather be one on the first group.

    Greetings

I think I might have to agree with you David.
I’ve had the I8910 since it was released in the UK back last May and it is soooooo frustrating reading all the reports and waiting for this OFFICIAL update. Now, nearly at the 9 month mark, and have just about had it. If Samsung can’t get their s–t organised and get this phone to where it’s potential should be within the next 3 months I will be forced to make the decision to leave Samung for good.

All you guys complaining out there … Kindly tell me what are your problems … ?

IF you want another OS on this set .. Sorry that aint gonna happen . Samsung is not stupid to do that . They are doing business not some free favors for people.

If you want FM transmitter then sorry to say Omnia HD is very poor in battery , Samsung always has been poor in that . Nokia is master in that , My N97 was only good at that thing, The problem is with its pathetic chargers . So FM transmitter is a total waste unless you have a car charger , plus quality of audio sucks on FM transmitter . It is a flop feature n resource hog.

IF you want kinetic scrolling then try some custom firmware . as i am using HXspeed 2.0 . It is quite stable even with Kastor Effects which are quite cool and there is no stability issue. (Had to hard format and then setup whole thing again )

As IPHONE vs Omnia thingy … Iphone sucks in display . Resolution is pathetic . AmoLED n resolution of Omnia is just too good . And the best feature about Omnia is it doesnt require you to convert .avi movies if you wanna watch it on OMNIA . Just copy and paste and you are all set. IPHONE sucks in that , Itunes doesnt convert .avi files and conversion is a time consuming process even if you use third party softwares.

Iphone doesnt multitask .. End of story . Are we living in stone age computing ??? Batch computer used to do that . One by One task . :P

So, Arslan Qamar,Whats your point? You bye something that doesn’t do what it says on the tin and then think to yourself “oh, thats a pity, dont work properly! and here’s me tied into a contract or paid out a lot for the phone, but what the hell, Samsungs made some money at least they’re happy” This is not about what should be on the phone, its about what is on it not working as well as it should. You’re right they are in business, and part of that business is to ensure that the products they sell do the job they say they will, and if they don’t then rectify the problems. Thats business!

What are the problems you are facing .

Trust me this set is way better than N97 of Nokia . i have used that set and that one hanged alot . had to restart that stupid device atleast once a day …..

I am a satisfied customer with this device . It never hangs and works at great speed.

Plus what samsung announced about this device . this is exactly what it is doing . Chk on GSM arena . It had no FM transmitter , and samsung chose Symbian v5 which they will never change . they aint stupid .

Justify your firmware update if you can coz i think you cant ….

I too like the phone, i think its got a lot of great points. But there are issues with it. I had to have one changed because callers couldnt hear me though i could them. This one goes through the battery twice as fast as the other one did, (others have this problem as well) so just because you have one that works fine, dont assume that other users dont have problems with theirs. As far as the firmware is concerned, i spoke on the phone to them a couple of wees ago, and was told they had the firmware update in hand but not the drivers to deliver it and didnt know how long it would take befor they did. Good planning eh.

One othe point i forgot, when i contacted my provider and told them about the battery problem one the replacement , I was told that one of the things on their diagnostic list was to offer the customer a spare battery. So as you say they are in business also and not into doing free favours,so they wouldn’t be giving batteries away free if they weren’t aware of problems.

Glad you got a free extra battery , I also have the same problem am not happy with the battery either but it doesnt bother me much as i charge it daily as the screen is big n capacitive and AMOLED is sharp , so battery is a big flaw in this set , mostly my set is on USB charging . This set is not for travelling for that Nokia 2300 is best works 7 days non stop.

Else wise i think the set is stable , One tip for you in order to increase battery life . Stop 3d effects…

I have gained 3 days from 1 day after i have put custom firmware in it.

The omnia HD is a very good phone, it just misses so many applications like iPhone or Nokia.

Here is what is missing for me :

Full applications like iPhone & Nokia
The cinetic scrolling for all the phone
Optimisations for the camera & sound record
    ….

And naturally, everybody is with the people of Haiti. But this website is for the Samsung Update, No for other matter.

We heard from several sources about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy 2 and it’s specs so we can take this pretty seriously.

    Specs:

    - 1 GHz Snapdragon
    - 3.7 inch AMOLED touchscreen
    - 5 MP camera
    - 32 GB internal memory
    - Android 2.1
    - 3.5 mm jack
    - and of course all the other goodies that make a decent smartphone, like GPS, WiFi and such.

It makes it a good competitor for the Nexus One and Xperia X10 and other top of the range smartphones of 2010. Expected release date is Q2 2010 but we are sure Samsung will make the official announcement at MWC in Barcelona next month.

Thank you for contacting Samsung Electronics UK regarding your i8910HD and the recent issue you have experienced.

I can assure you that we will continue to provide technical support on this handset as well honouring the 2-year warranty that comes with all our phone. You mention a ‘Jan2010 firmware update that has been promised by Samsung’. The only mention of this I can see is on internet forums. We cannot be held responsible for incorrect information that appears on non Samsung websites. Nokia N97 just got updated, again. Well, firmware updates are always welcome even if there is nothing major on the list of changes. The only interesting news concerning the 21.0.045 firmware version is the improved kinetic scrolling, which should be smoother now … SUCKY SAMSUNG WAKE UP

Samsung sucks bigtime. Been waiting for like all my life for the firmware update. Yeah the fone looks great at the first glance but it would suck bigtime upon hands-on usage. Errrr, it saddens me that this had become comparable to an abandoned building… Nothing to be expected, nothing more to do… nothing more to fuckin’ wait for…

Not sure what everybody is shouting about. I expect a new firmware to contain some improvements and bugfixes, but honestly, I am not waiting for a specific fix for anything in particular. The phone works great for me. The podcast app is severely buggy, but I just replaced it with a 3rd part podcatcher. Otherwise, the phone is fantastic. I did a side-by-side comparison with my colleague’s 3gs the other day, and the only thing the 3gs has is a slightlyt better form factor with its rounded corners. Otherwise, the Samsung is -far- better in every respect. Just my 5 cents…

I’ve always bought Nokia and generally haven’t been disapponted as their support is 2nd to none. For example even the N95 recently got an update and how old is it. I was apprehensive about buying samsung as the research I did said they weren’t very good in the support dept. I guess people knew what they were talking about. I blame myself for falling for their ad campaign. It really did look the business in the ads. As soon as N900 is available on O2 its bye bye Samsung…….

I took this phone on UK Orange mainly for the 8mp camera and Hi-Def video. Neither work properly – most notably unable to select the anti-shake option on the camera and the terrible sound quality on camcorder. Also, if you press ‘stop’ in the browser it exits completely.

I did flash to some different firmware recently which was OK, but have flashed back to UK Orange firmware in anticipation of the firmware update which is allegedly due.

I’ve always had Nokias before and they were great in terms of support. I was put off the N97 by reports of dodgy firmware (which I’m sure has been resolved). I’m a little annoyed that such a great (end expensive piece of hardware can only be made to work properly by going through unofficial channels and risking destroying the phone. Samsung’s attitude seems to be ‘we’ve got your money so now we don’t care’.

My experience with this, along with a Samsung Blu-ray player that had to go away for repair after less than 4 months, then went wrong again a few weeks later, means I’ll never buy another Samsung product.

When my contract expires I’ll go back to Nokia. You know where you are with them!

I agree Peder, it is the best phone ever and it does rock with the newest unofficial firmware. That’s kind of the point I was trying to make: You have to search the web and go through unofficial channels to make it work properly ,with the potential risk of bricking the phone!

I still think this is a great phone. What I can’t understand , is Samsungs attitude to the phone, and their customers. If they would just do what they said and bring out the new firmware to sort out the glitches, (And lets face it, no matter how much any of us love this phone, it does have them) then great, thats all anyone is asking for. So if the want to dump Symbian, fine thats up to them, But lets face it, it isn’t a cheap phone, so surely we are entitled to some consideration. I’ve mentioned this before and I don’t know a lot about these things, so nobody laugh ha ha. But is it possible to change the OS on these things? And if it is, then why dont they give us the option and take us with them when the bring out their new OS. Surely if it is possible, then that would be a way to help keep both sides happy and maybe do something to repair the damage they have done to their customers confidence in them. Just a thought!

Well for the umpteenth time, I’ve hacked this phone again successfully with the new Italian Firmware XXJA1 ITVJA1. It’s working fine, the problems I had with the pre-release UK firmware are non existent. The kinetic scrolling is fixed, smooth enough and the scroll bar bug has gone completely. The media files now load up a little quicker in thumbnail mode too and the corruption of large files is also fixed.

Here’s the reality now, Samsung have done as promised and released a new update, it may not contain ground breaking new software to match half the other smart phones on the market but it is at least working well now. As far as apps go, well don’t need much but there are tons that work for Symbian S60v5 operating system, I’ve got loads that work for my friends Nokia 5800 that run on my phone too. I’m simply not into the Apple bug of collecting Apps for collectings sake just to show your phone off but never use them again unless showing off to another friend! There are tons of games that work on this phone too but essentially all I need to be happy with the phone is practically here now in this latest update. From here I can customise with whatever else I need from third party developers or Samsung official widgets and apps. &20p video recording, 8mp camera with flash and the ability to play almost any video I download from the internet without transcoding into another format first. This screen is still the best i’ve ever seen on a mobile too! I can safely say I’m sticking with this device and the iphone/Apple wannabe’s can happily move on and moan somewhere else while hunting for the second job that’ll pay for the expensive lifestyle they’ve just invested in.

I really don’t like Samsung’s update policy. I mean here in Switerzland we didn’t get any official new Firmware update since last june. I still have the Version I8910XXIFB from the 14/06/2009! To get an actual firmware i would have to flash my I8910 and that really shouldn’t be. To make promises like they start to roll out an update in January and don’t do it it’s another thing which is really bad. But I don’t give up. I believe this update will come. I don’t believe they worked on a firmware and don’t release it. I mean just look at this:

I’d rather go with the hardware handicapped Nokia N97, considering the frequency of firmware updates and improvements done by Nokia for its N95… last update was by the end of 2009, which means a lot. I expect firmware improvements for the poor N97 to make it overall better than the i8910 because Samsung doesn’t give a shit about its customers.
I’ll try the 3GS first. My wife has the iPhone 2G and it’s quite ok since last firmware update: I saw some comments that say bluetooth is not working. Well, firmware 3.0 repaired the bluetooth stack so I was able to pair, connect and make a call using my Nokia bluetooth heaset with the iPhone 2G.
In conclusion, the only two reliable phone manufacturers are Nokia and Apple. I never had a Samsung phone and given that the i8910HD was dumped by its maker, I will never buy a Samsung mobile phone (they make excellent other products though).

You shouldn’t have to tweak it….

Why would you have a press release saying you would do something and not do it? It doesn’t make sense and if anything makes them look a bit stupid.

It was billed as the most powerful Smartphone going especially considering the specs but the dedicated graphics processor doesn’t exactly speed up the rendering of graphics I find especially looking at photos…..in fact its downright slow.

On another note is anyone having the annoying problem of when surfing if you swipe the screen left or right it goes back to photocontacts or applications and you have to use task manager to get back to the browser. It happens with me no matter which browser I use built in, Opera Beta 2 (fantastic browser) or Skyfire It is really annoying.

Why would I spend ~400 € on a phone with which I must spend hours to install “workarounds”? If you can give a good argument for wasting hours with a software handicapped phone instead of going out with friends or spending quality time with my wife or just USING the phone when needed, without feeling like smashing it into the walls just because I didn’t “workaround” it, I’ll buy it. There, I gave you my arguments for the iPhone or the Nokia.

I read couples of info about HyperX 2.0 and it’s seems that freelance developer named “Andy” must be recognized at least caring for i8910 and invested lots of time improving his own FW. On the other hand, Samsung the manufacturer, doesn’t even care about the phone and instead dedicate themselves produce brand new phones. I learned also that their new OS BADA will be launched this coming MWC 2010. So, I wonder now if Samsung really informed about our problems with i8910.

I am an IT pro too (senior software developer) and I have seen so much crappy software in my life that I really just want software to work properly AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: AS ADVERTISED. Really, I want to enjoy life, I am fed with “customizing” and “workarounds” so I see Nokias or iPhone as phones that serve you, not like the Samsung i8910HD, for which you pay a haystack of money then you’re its servant. And by the way, jailbreaking the iPhone opens the door to multitasking. As an IT pro you should’ve known.

    or

The restless souls pushing everything to its limits ….

FYI i know about multi tasking in iphone it is now where near symbian’s multitasking ….

You hate this phone then throw it , smash it burn it .. do what ever you want …

You’re doing a poor job defending this phone. What kind of advice is “you don’t like it, just throw it, burn it, smash it”? It serves nothing to nobody (are you willing to pay people for the phones so that they can destroy them and move on?). On the other hand, my acid comments on this phone might help a lot of people not get trapped into buying this phone and (though the chance is at slimmest) maybe Samsung sees this and thinks about it. I don’t have it yet, so I don’t have to smash anything. I am looking for reviews before buying something of value, exactly to avoid spending a fortune on this kind of crap.
You are also very limited in thinking there are two “communities” of users. Perhaps you are the dumb one?

@ Arslan. You seem to be what I call an intelligent moron and are missing the point. What the GENERAL PUBLIC want is what was originally advertised (and working), not something that needs time and effort to get it right. If I go into Sainsburys and buy a carmello chocolate bar and inside the wrapper is a dairy milk bar – it’s not what I wanted and I’ll complain. Samsung advertised the i8910 as having this, this, this this and this, unfortunately this and this don’t work properly.
Having you talk about “tweaking” and “workarounds” means absolute crap to me. I am not one of those who is 100% computer literate (although I get by) and if I tried to do something (eg: download and install some firmware) and I get it wrong, the phone becomes a brick worth nothing. So why would I want to take the risk. The product should do what Samsung said it would……..simples!

Ok, well i just researched HyperX and installed his firmware 2.2. I am impressed so far! Its not the complete change I would like, but it will keep me happy for now and resolves a number of issues. It is disappointing that i have had to do this, and its not the most straightforward thing to do. Im still not sure exactly how it works and what patches i need etc etc and it will take alot of mucking about to maintain it.

But this fw will keep me going over the summer probably and then i’ll look to getting something new later in the year. Im giving up entirely on any official updates.

After giving up my hopes for a new official firmware, I have spent much much time researching on the best apps that could possibly be installed onto it. Now I’d say I’m much much happier with it :)
    1. An application that gives you an iPhone-like homescreen: Panning Left and right with all your favorite apps arranged on the homescreen. This makes up for the lack of Kinetic Scrolling, nothing but great.
    2. Great SIS/SISX games that were created mainly for touch-screen fones. Enough with the sluggish java games, hello Touch-Optimized symbian games :)
    3. Great SIS/SISX apps that were created mainly for touch-screen fones. Enough with the sluggish java apps, hello Touch-Optimized symbian apps. Hundreds of Apple-like small apps that may not be really useful but adds much much coolness and hotness to the phone :)

Guys, I’ve got a copy of the new firmware, actually a trial version (with text “Trial – Samsung Inc.” on the upper part of the screen). The firmware is a good one I should say. Kinetic scrolling is smooth except on the gallery, In the Settings actually is the gallery touch setUp, wherein you have two options: 1. Smoother scrolling but photo thumbnails won’t be processed while scrolling. So with this, you have to stop scrolling for the phone to load all thumbnails. 2. Freakier scrolling but photo thumbnails load at the same time. THe loading is alot faster now I should say. Also, this trial firmware doesn’t have wifi support yet. I guess they are tweaking some stuffs with the wifi connectivity… Well as of this trial version, the fone could not connect to wifi. As for the camera and video, still very much the same, though some added frames for the camera were added. you now have a wide variety of frames and effects to choose from. All in all, Im giving this firmware a grade of 8, 10 for iPhone’s OSX, and 4 for the last official firmware.

Salesmen are desperate to get rid of the i8910HD handsets on stock so they serve bullshit like this to potential clients to keep up the sales (just check on ebay, you’ll see). Don’t believe there is such thing as “trial firmware”. It’s hilarious. Something “trial” must be easily removable and reversable, which is never the case with firmwares.

Lets face it, we’ve all been conned by Samsung from the very begining . Nobody in customer services or tech support at Samsung that I have emailed or spoken to on the phone seems to know a thing about the existence of any firmware update, let alone any release date! I just dont believe that Samsung can possibly have any firmware update on the cards for this handset and their tech support group in the UK not know about it.

Believe what you want, I have the new firmware (Italian version) Kinetic Scrolling fixed and everything. It’s fine, nothing spectacular in terms of a overhaul but It’s allowed me to be a lot more at ease with my handset and finally put back all my apps and games without waiting any longer for the official UK update. Since switching to the italian version of firmware updates last year, every update has been released for the italians long before the UK version finally sees the light of day. I’d recommend flashing your handset to the Italian firmware and stop waiting for Samsung UK to get their ass in gear! Latest Italian firmware = XXJA1 ITVJA1 just in case you wanted to know.

Having read the report I have to say the only one of those issues which I have noticed is the quality of HD video recordings. Will another firmware upgrade change my life? I think not. Each to their own though. Perhaps the Orange firmware I am running is just better than unbranded (he says contraversially)

    FACT:

Samsung Omnia i8910 HD and Nokia n97 are now selling at almost same price, although Omnia HD exceeds n97 in every single aspect and why is that? The answer is software. Nokia invests a lot in development of excellent softwares. Ovi maps is just one of them. Software development is very costly. Samsung is smarter because it makes sure that the money we spent goes to the hardware. They just release a hack unofficially to help the omnia HD community. The hack enables to install most of S60 5th edition applications on omnia HD. Since Samsung released the hack unofficially (in the name of unknown samsung user), nokia has nothing to complain about Samsung. And also, Samsung is supporting unofficial firmware like hyperX.

The problem is that your phone is branded by Orange, far as i know that means your stuck with the fw they provide and not what Samsung releases.. The newest offical release is XXII1, browser fix/3D taskmanager/audio fix/bugs.
You could “Debrand” your phone but that risks voiding your warranty, but I’ve read many users are glad they did. There’s alot of guides on the net if that’s a option for you..

I’ve just downloaded what I think is the new update from PC Studio (my phone previously had the latest Italian firmware) and I can’t say I’m too impressed. Memory on C: is extremely low, x-plore shows the total memory to be 23.5mb whereas I think the last version had 39.5mb. So after installing stuff that doesn’t seem to be able to go on the mass memory (navmii, quickoffice etc..) I’m left with less than a megabyte. Can just about get away with this by deleting reserved.bin but..
Kinetic scrolling is there and it seems to be a bit zippier but not a great improvement and kind of wish i hadn’t done it!

Its a waste of time expecting anything from Samsung on the subject of firmware updates for the i8910HD. I’ve Emailed them at customer services asking, and they seem to know nothing about it. I even got an answerphone message on my home phone, and during that he said something along the lines of ” with regardes to a firmware update, I dont know where you got that from” THEIR OWN PRESS RELEASE IS WHERE! Its pathetic! I think that Samsung Customer Support dont even monitor this or any other forum site to do with this handset, because if they did they would be aware of the number of angry I8910 owners, not just in the UK where I am, but throughout the world, and would want to address the situation. In my opinion it points to one of two things. Either they dont know how annoyed people are with being strung along. Or, and this seems more likely, they dont give a sh*t. And they should, because this could cost them customer wise. This is not about failing to supporting just one phone, its more to do with the total disregard for their customers. People who bought the Samsung I8910 probably buy other Samsung products. Will they continue to? not me!

This is because every fw released by Samsung is region based, so the JB1 is only avalible (as far as i know) for italian users as off right now.. Contact your local support and ask for the latest fw code for your region. I think I8910XXII2 should be an alternative.

Just like to say that after much research and patiently waiting to get new official firmware I , like Arsian, flashed my phone to hx 2.03. On their web site it is all there , the software and instructions. I took took the plunge sweating that my phone would become a expensive paperweight but within ten minutes my phone was reborn. It is quicker, sleeker, all the ovi store apps work on it ( even though there are only prob about half a dozen you would use all the time which makes me laugh when i see over a thousand iphone apps!). The camera and video is slightly improved but hey still a superb cam phone more memory space and prob more improvments I have not even found yetEven more amazing is the guys who did the hx roms did not charge a thing . It puts my faith back into programmers!

    Hi Seth,
When i flashed mine, i was originally on the Official crap FW, and then flashed to the Itallian Firmware. After reading all the reviews and being let down my Samsung, i decided to flash to HX, at present i am using 2.02, and i think its fantastic. Tempted to go over to the 2.03, but im not sure on the benefits.
What i would recommend is Google HyperX and the first link will go to his site. There you find all the downloads and the tutorial on how to Flash. I would advise reading it very carefully to make sure you dont Brick your phone.

Well here we are….. Samsung have forsaken us for their new Bada phone the Wave – which does sound as though its nearly as powerfull and as beautiful as our beloved i8910. I can understand them consentrating on their new way forward but that does little for us lot who have parted with, actually a lot of money.
Anyway HX is great. 2.02 is nice and fast and slick and all of that. 2.03 is even faster and only lacks the 3D taskmanager. I can live without it. See HX’s site. All explanations, run throughs, tutorials, links and downloads are there.
If you flash HX then you will be able to download and install the compatible apps in the ovi store. I can help anyone who needs the correct .sis ovi store file for the i8910.
Without HX you have an abismal few apps to use but still a phone that looks beautiful – especially with a good pic on the homescreen, plays movies very well, and although it has its shortcomings it IS still the only phone that shoots video in HD! Oh and it makes phonecalls too.
    Long live the i8910HD!!

I think the coolest app is sky by mobile . My garmin app works perfectly too. I might go to hx 2.03 or wait for protx to be debugged as hyperx is pushing the limits with that one.

So i read that if you intall java 2.02 beta it will fix the problem. And to my surprise it did. however after a fe hours everytime i want to open a java app i get the error saying: “Application start-up failed. Internal error”. I am really worried somethiig is wrong. Please guys if anyone has a solution please post it.

Thomas B: Ja flash bare til Hyperx. But if you have a 16GB then keep to 2.00, because there are bugs in it that don’t compy with the 16GB version.

Or wait until he finishes 2.1 speed, it is coming soon.

But i have flashed it with HX Speed and that is pretty good. gonna run this phone into the ground and get a new one in the summer.

If it’s gonna take Samsung even more months to finish and release the official fw update, I’ll just have the time to be even more pissed at those guys. They promised us improvements, and we haven’t gotten them. I like to compare our phone wirh the Iphone, in that our phone has superb hardware, but shitty OS and fw. Iphone has shitty hardware, but offers a truly smooth user interface and a sleek experience.
This is frustrating, because i8910hd could and should have been so much better than the iphone, with no effort at all. Last hope would be Samsung porting Bada to our phone, but let’s see..

Samsung appears to me more and more to not be a serious company when it comes to mobile phones, and even though I love their TVs and monitors, I’m very tempted not to buy anything branded Samsung ever again.

Samsung have more or less moved on from the i8910, us as users are stuck with what we bought. The Samsung Apps Store only supports Omnia phones, but not THIS Omnia phone, what does that tell you? And if anyone has seen the presentation they put on for the new WAVE with its BADA operating System then they’ll realize the i8910 is simply the past and the WAVE along with the BADA os they developed themselves, is the future. There’s no point crying about it, this is the world of mobile phone purchasing, Samsung have developed many phones over the last two years and most of them are in the same boat as the i8910. BADA is gonna be Samsungs serious push into the market currently dominated by the iPhone. Microsoft have developed a new Windows 7 Mobile os that’s also gonna be their big push into that same iphone dominated market. To be honest Microsofts os looks revolutionary and will be available on other phones, not just their own brand. Recently the HTC HD2 was stated to be able to upgrade to the new Windows Mobile 7 os from the old Windows Mobile 6.5 os it currently has (and that’s very nice). And then there’s the Google Nexus One phone that is outstanding and supports the New Android 2.1 os. All these new Operating Systems are supported by an Apps store so that they can make a serious opposition to the Apple dominated market. The i8910 is unfortunate to be the interim between a good intention and a well executed plan. My advice would be to hold on to your phone until the contract runs out and then consider all three new OS before jumping on the old iPhone bandwagon. I’ve opted to flash my phone to a cooked firmware for ease through the remainder of my contract, and then i’ll be either purchasing the new Google Nexus One or an HTC HD2. BADA on the new Samsung Wave is nice but its very Apple OS orientated and unless Samsung release a BADA firmware update for the i8910, then I will consider no loyalties towards purchasing another Samsung phone, even though I would still consider it. What I won’t do is buy into the Apple lifestyle just to become another mindless sheep under the control of the Apple shepherd and dominated by iTunes!

Got to agree Ceejay. The i8910 HD has the ability to be a fantastic phone, shame Samsung decided to let it go, would love to try it with the Bada OS but dont think it will happen, but then again, who knows, with Samsung anything could and does happen. One thing i will say though, i’ll never buy another anything with the Samsung logo. They have no respect for the very customers that helped put them where they are. So if you get problems with any of their items i’m not saying they wont help, but don’t be supprised if they just ignore you. Lets face it, they already have your money so why should they bother with you. They are big and don’t care, we are vey very little and unimportant!

Apple IPhone would be my next phone. ppl are not mindless and under control by apple for nothing…! they have really provided the best OS and huge App store …they really care for their customers, they are not only into launching new phones all the time…!
i8910 has best and… way better hardware than iPhone…but whats the point as their is not a single app for this phone in their own app store…!

Well good luck mate, hopefully by then Apple will have turned a new leaf and made the new iPhone a lot more free to personalize without having to have to jailbreak and run the risk of being shut out of the app store completely! Apple are too dominating a company for me to ever buy their products, they don’t license any hardware or software out to other developers or manufacturers. Once you buy into that Apple lifestyle your stuck moaning about the price of everything they control that you either need or want for the rest of your days! And hopefully they’ll sort out the things apple users who finally got over the novelty of having a smooth and pretty interface suddenly realized where still a no-no with the device like.. No memory upgrade, no battery replacement without returning the entire phone for exchange, three years of development and still no decent camera with any sign of an LED or Xenon Flash, three years and finally they allowed Multimedia text messeging (THREE FREAKING YEARS!!!), GLASS LCD screen breaks EVERY-TIME, scratches EVERY-TIME, no Amoled screen, no 16:9 ration screen so all your videos play in smaller letterbox’s or cropped to fill the screen, no avi, Divx, Mpg, FLV, MKV or any other video type other than Mp4 or apples own MOV movie file playback without a jailbreak app, no noise cancellation headphones, Crap battery life, no bluetooth to any decvices other than headphones and other iPhones, 90,000 apps? yeah but that’s becasue to almost every application on the App-store there’s about 4 to 60 duplicates from different companies of the same freaking app! No Flash support in internet mode, no cut and paste function, utterly iTunes reliant, TWO YEAR phone contracts? Might as well get married! Add to all this the fact that if you jailbreak to really allow the machine to do some cool stuff, then Apple will use all their power at their disposal to shut you out from the rest of the Apple and iPhone community, this is what they spend millions on every year, new ways to force you to play within their own rules and with other iPhone users only. No matter what problems you’ve had Samsung over the i8910 consider this and what’s to come once they find ways to enforce their ways against jailbreaking. At least with the i8910, you have the freedom to flash your mobile with any firmware be it third party developed or official and still have all the above that the iPhone won’t allow. If however you honestly think all this freedom and ability is worth exchanging for a prettier graphical User Interface and the one shop visit to 90,000 mostly repeatedly cloned apps at ridiculous prices, then by all means give your money and life away to the Apple Corp for the next two years of new things to moan about and very expensive repairs for a phone that is guaranteed to break at least twice. (yes, guaranteed, everyone – EVERYONE – I know with one has broken the screen if the actual phone more than once or twice)

    @Ceejay
Quality comes to a price. Apple makes high quality products. Memory upgrade? Why would you need more than 16 Gb? My wife has the 1st gen iPhone, she never put more than 2 Gb on her phone. Battery still works like in the first day.
For the struggle with the i8910 you pay with frustration, stress, anger, fury and so on. If you hate Apple, just say so. An overwhelming number of people really enjoy their products, despite their pricey tag.
P.S. I am a Nokia fan, though this is fading away since they weren’t able to come up with a real top phone like the N95 was (I still use it). Had Samsung offered excellent software support for the i8910, I would now be a huge fan of theirs.

@Ceejay , i have become a fan of u, the way u explained IPhone facts and wording u used to explain all this, I cant just do that. coz of language barrier, but I am sure if you start explaining facts and figures for i8910 HD it would take more than one posts like this,
finding good apps to work on ur phone is really frustrating, and some times even when u find one it doesnt work.
as far as I know about iPhone, it also has scratch poof screen.
Aspect ratio of i8910 HD is also not very good, dnt what it is exactly ….!
no doubt harware of i8910 is best, including camera and flash but still u cant only rely on hardware.
iPhone has 90 thousand repeated apps, something is better than nothing, and 90k is not only something.
Android is a good option but i will not take risk next time, I will wait for next iPhone upgrade may be iPhone 4g with multi tasking, and better camera, without flash ofcourse ;) but still i would prefer iPhone.

Claus: I don’t hate Apple but I don’t like their marketing values. The restrictions and ridiculous lengths they go to in order to micro-manage the lifestyles of everyone who purchases their products, goes beyond customer care and into the realms of a Draconian Overseer! Having 16gb on a phone is one thing, capacity needs and uses is due to the needs of the individual. The point isn’t whether anyone, you or your wife should use, will use or ever need more than 16gb. The point is every single phone on the market allows you the choice to store data on a removable storage device aside from the resident memory and hard disk that might get corrupted. The point is “Choice” the very thing Apple do not want you to have becasue they are a company that wishes the least amount of third party interaction as possible with their devices and with the users of their devices. Sure the software on the iPhone was revolutionary when it first arrived three years ago and the software on the i8910 is no way as slick or well supported. But the iPhone has had its own problems since day one with both software and hardware and three years down the line it still has many of the same shortcomings and handicaps yet one year on and the only complaint most have here is that the i8919 doesn’t have software and apps as slick as the iPhone! What Phone does? Any that came out a year ago? None! Yet what phone has hardware as advanced as the i8910 today despite software and apps? Not many, that’s for sure! The i8910 has more superior hardware than the iPhone, the gulf between its still camera and video camera compared to the iPhone three years since release, is akin to the gulf between a VW Beetle and a Ferrari Testarossa ! The screen on the i8910 is perfect for viewing all formats of video in true widescreen as well unlike the 4:3 ratio of the iPhone that 3 years on has only one real good use and that’s for viewing web pages! I didn’t purchase my i8910 to collect apps, people who wanted to do that bought an iPhone! I bought my phone for the convenience of being able to store downloaded films and TV shows and watch them at my leisure on trips and lunch breaks at work without having to hack my phone or convert the video format and size to make it work! People need to stop being green-eyed about apps becasue most apps simply exist to be collected or duplicated, not actually used for any genuine benefit. I have about ten apps on my phone that i truly have any use for and a lot of games, all cost me absolutely nothing! I’m free to change my firmware and try anything I like, i’m free to expand my memory or hot-swap my microSD card for another with different music on it without fear of being locked out of iTunes or any software controlling device that my phone needs to operate or be of any use! I’m free to receive and dispatch bluetooth content to any of my friends devices as long as it isn’t an iPhone simply becasue Apple don’t want them to play with the rest of the world! And should my phone battery get damaged I can simply replace it without sending the entire device away for Apple to do it at a cost! The iPhone has its own problems so those who think getting one will ease their pains simply bought the i8910 for the wrong reasons. Yes, the iPhone has better software than my i8910 but it is in no way a better mobile phone for my daily use or the quality of what the hardware delivers as a multimedia device. Freedom is more important to me than multi-touch and an apps store! Mansoor & i8910User, thanks for your kind words, your English isn’t bad at all!

I agree, the i8910HD has the best hardware but it’s as useful as a brick because of the lack of software. Add this to the fact that Samsung has boasted HD video recording but it simply doesn’t work. Besides the fact that Samsung lied about the specifications for the default installed software on the i8910HD, your alleged limitation in the use of the iPhone is simply not true. One could have any degree of freedom one wants. Remove the software restriction by jailbreaking it and even more apps are available through Cydia and Rock (most of the people don’t even need to do this, they’re happy with what is at hand). Try and understand that the best hardware device is useless without strong software support.
So please, be objective. And by the way, a very long comment isn’t automatically a convincing one. You get quite the opposite. Noone will read it.

    Mansoor –

    - Connect your handset to your PC using the USB cable
    - Select ‘mass storage’ mode
    - In ‘my computer’ open the drive of your phone
    - Go to Private/101f8857 and delete the Cache folder
    - In the same directory create a new folder and name it ‘Cache’
    - Disconnect and restart your phone and you will be free of ghost images

This release was officially done by Samsung and they make it seem like it will be the new standard firmware and that it’s as simple as updating via PC studio 7. I’m asking myself, is Samsung really planning on improving this phone. The hardware is powerful, but the phone is just a mess! By the time the update is available, everyone would be having a new phone. Definitely not a so called multimedia touch-phone from Samsung again. It’s not even close to the usability of the HTC and Sony Eriksson competitors.

Yea, I agree. I’ve learned my lesson too. Although I think the phone is solid and superior to the iPhone in hardware, the software and the support are shocking. In addition to never again buying a Samsung phone, I will never buy a Nokia phone, since it’s their software that is so buggy.

Same here. Samsung doesn’t want us as customers is the message we can draw from this sl0wp0ked update-rumours (how do we know Samsung actually will complete the update at all?)

If that’s how it’s gonna be, we too can play tough. Never buying a Samsung product again is what my future looks like, unless the update Samsung say they’re working on is way awesome. I want android. I want someone other than Samsung to supply the firmware, because, frankly, they’re n00bs.

Seriously, Samsung. If you’re gonna make High-end phones at all, and smartphones in particular, you gotta SUPPORT them! Not like your old, dumb-ass phones, whom hardly required care at all.

Our brick, relaunched with Android could actually do something, could actually be a market contender, and if Samsung doesn’t know that, they need some new analysts over there in Seoul.

Hmm.. I live in the Dutch country-side. With the same provider and a nokia95 I had splendid network. After a year with the i8910 it seems to get worse everyday. And also in better conditions a basic phoneconversation gets more and more difficult. Also: i find numerous missed calls every day.. How about the hardware being so good?? Not to speak about support and software.
This is my first and last samsung… Pitty, seemed so nice..

Well after a 6 months of an 18 month contract, it ‘died’ and now thanks to insurance I have a HTC HD2. This phone has similar issues to the Samsung as the O/S is Windows Mobile 6.5 – but, these issues are a drop in the ocean when I think back and compare them to the i8910. My main gripe with the HD2 is lack of HD video. From the new cracked ROM out and looking at the sample videos taken my 2 pence worth boils down to: At least you guys have HD video and my god does it look good. But thats just not enough… If you check, the most common word (other than sh!t) is pitty on this page – we all know why….

this forum has died, probably everyone lost the hope of a new fimware release. soon it’s june and still no release, and i don’t think it will come very soon. and if it comes , it won’t come with application store , there is no application for omnia hd beside google maps, fring, opera and 2-3 other . samsung could prepare a bada version for omnia hd, but they just won¨t do it , too much work they say… like we care how much work they have to do…they tricked us with this mobilw, we payed much money for it so we should get a better os for this mobile. Hyper x ‘s firmware is unstable, fast but unstable, got issues with camera and connectivity troubles with 3G in google maps so i went back on latest italian firmware.Android on omnia hd ? don¨t think so, it looks like it is too difficult to achieve, requires too much work from omnia hd fans. Check anphase’s forum too .

you are right corneliu84, I have completely lost my hope for new firmware, this forum has died already.
my contract is ending in Feb next year but I cant live with this brick anymore, I m waiting for new iPhone release in June, hopefully It will be in Uk market by July.
from now on I will neva eva buy any Samsung product, and never advice anyone to buy. such a shame for a big name like Samsung, they really dont care for their customers. they just care about selling and releasing new phones, I think they believe in quantity not quality, they should learn some lesson from Apple, they release just three phones in three years, but their OS usability has no match.
I hope and wish samsung will lose all its customers one by one like me….!

New official firmware I8910XCSJC1 is available at service points for Czech/Slovak markets with kinetic scrolling. Update via PC Studio will be available soon too. More details about features of new firmware will be posted later on. I am not sure yet if it is a Big Update or just common update. So it means Samsung at least met its public commitment after 5 months. Hoping the other euro-markets will have the same good news.

it really depends what you want from it if you want a good camera there aint many phones that are better the same with the video yes the sound was not great but it has got there now
the phone still does the job better than most others and thanks to all the people on this form and there input to have others solving there problems………:-)

You’re right, it is a good phone, better than most. You are also right about Samsung. To be honest, they dont care about customer relations one bit. I wrote them by post, sent it recorded delivery, I know they got the letter because I checked, and you know what, they didn,t even reply, let alone answer any of my questions. I was going to buy a Samsung HD TV, not now. Vote with your feet guys, if you aint happy with a manufacturer, NEVER buy one of their products EVER again. Thats what i’m doing. With a bit of luck and customer power they will get the message when there sales drop off. That should get their attention, because all they care about is PROFIT. But like Gavin says, email them so they know why you are not buying any more of their products, Best start your email in BOLD BLOCK CAPITALS, saying NOT BUYING ANY MORE OF YOUR PRODUCTS BECAUSE…………….. That way they may bother to read it ha ha

    Hi all

yes there is no uk firmware to date but there are plenty of other country version that work the same yes you get some of the other country stuff but the free stuff that cam with the samsung wasnt great any way the app store was a joke

if you look in the forum and all the great work people have done here you can get most apps that you want for the phone any way plus there are all the nokia ones too even know some of them dont work properly there is still plenty around

the phone does the job fopr me i can take great phones with it what you cant with alot of other, you can get good vedio i even straped it to one of my model planes the other day and tock some vedio what wasnt bad i’ll post some when i get a mo, and its a great sat nav with garmin on it, plus you cant fault the display there aint many more other phones any way

and for all you that want an iphone go a head i dont know many people that have been happy with them, with all the problems people have plus you have to have an itunes account that just a con for a start and the phone cant even do the basics like bluetoothing between phone for one not sure anbout the 4g version plus why they called it that 4g lol that just for all the stupid people

any way that of me chest

keep up the good work people this phone would have been lost with out this site and the people

Seriously? Still slamming this phone down? I put the HyperX firmware on it ages ago and have been fine with it ever since. When I buy my next phone it’ll be an Android based one and probably the HTC Evo or the Samsung Galaxy i9000. What I won’t be doing is joining the poor saps waiting to buy the new iphone4. Only Apple would produce a phone with a resolution so high but the same small screen as before so you can’t tell the difference. Half the previous iphone owners i know have all gone Android, most are sick of the non-flash support on the iphone’s infamous internet experience and the fact the damn device always breaks. Had a customer bring back his ipad for the same reason a few days ago! At least after 4 years they finally put a LED flash on the damn camera!

To be honest I think this is a really good phone, but as I said before, its Samsung that’s the problem. No real support, not updating when they said they would or sorting out the bugs. If I went out and bought a new car and it turned out the engine was crap, I wouldn’t just get another engine from someone else, i’d expect the manufacturer I got the car from to sort it out. Having said that, I have had an update here in the UK, and it does have kinetic scrolling and a few other things on it, such as when you’re into options, show open apps, its in 3D so you can flick through them. Got it via Samsung Studio 7, version 7.2.24.9. Had to try a few times as the connection seemed a bit erratic, but got there in the end. I’m with Orange and my new software versions are, software version I8910BVJB1 dated 01/02/10, custom version I8910ORAJC1 dated 17/03/10. Hope this helps guys. but as i’ve said before, this isn’t about the phone, its a great phone. It’s about respect for the people that buy your products, and it seems as far as SAMSUNG is concerned its JUST NOT THERE!

Well I gave up checking the Samsung PC suite for the big January update in March, as it kept telling me that my firmware was completely up to date.. However, I’ve just plugged my UK Orange phone into the Samsung PC Suite and it it now says I can have i8910XXJA1. Is this the one we’ve all been waiting for?

I’d been using the Polish firmware but Samsung PC suite wouldn’t recognise the phone, so I reflashed back to UK Orange firmware last December in anticipation of the ‘January’ release, and apart from occasional checking via PC Studio haven’t bothered with it since.

Am charging the phone now and will give it a go once fully charged.

Sincerelly , this is the worst phone i ever had . The frustration of buying a very expensive phone with a very good hardware , and no applications is immense … I bought this worthless piece of plastic after i sold my iPhone 3gs because i was tired of unlocking . Now i am decided to pay thousands of euros on phones made by Apple * unlocked . It is a very nice thing to do , to get on the market one model per year …and stick with it many years after like they did yith the first iPhone , than throw tons of phones on the market and never care about the pleased and not so pleased customers . Omnia HD is just as worthless as a 12 cores mega computer with Windows 95 on it . Theoretically you can do any thing …but in practice it is unusable .

I do not now what IMAP is . I do not want to know … I Want it to remember my WIFI spots and to connect automatically . I am an accountant … Iphone is just asking me what kind of email i have ( yahoo…etc .. )

Same here – I had a Samsung blu-ray player which had to go back for repair twice (due to crap firmware and no updates). Third time it went wrong I swapped it for a Panasonic (which still gets firmware updates even now).

Samsung seem to develop exciting new shiny products and then leave the people that bought them in the lurch while they develop something newer. Not the best way to encourage brand loyalty. People just want something that works straight away without faffing around on the web trying to find better firmware.

It’s no use having something that ‘could be’ a good product when your competitors are offering products that actually are good with decent backup.

So, sorry Samsung (if anyone from Samsung’s reading), as you seem to treat the people who’ve spent their hard earned cash on your products with total contempt, I’ll never buy another of your products again.

Oh, and I work in electrical retail so I’ll be telling my customers your stuff’s junk as well. I’m the one they’d shout at when they realise it doesn’t work properly, so I’ll avoid the hassle by simply not selling your crap!
